If Jennifer Aniston were looking to steal some thunder from the media storm rumbling around Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who are currently stumping for "Ocean's Thirteen" and "A Mighty Heart," respectively, a People cover story about a hot new romance with a big ol' slice of beefcake would certainly be a good way to do it.

In its latest issue, the magazine identifies the easy-on-the-eyes mystery man who was spied "gently" rubbing Jen's back and holding her hand during a romantic three-hour candlelit dinner at a Santa Monica, Calif., eatery over Memorial Day weekend.

Turns out the affectionate guy is little-known (until now) British model Paul Sculfor, 36, whom the actress-turned-smartwater pitchwoman, 38, met a couple months back while dining with BFF Courteney Cox at Il Sole, their favorite Los Angeles restaurant.

A mutual pal reportedly introduced Jen to the chiseled, 6-foot-tall model, who left school at 16 and dabbled in boxing and bricklaying before fronting campaigns -- often sans shirt and pants -- for the likes of Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and Levi's Jeans.

Sparks, as they say, flew.

Aniston and Sculfor have been dating for only a few weeks, says People, but they've already discovered some common ground, including -- hold onto your hats! -- a love of Mexican food.

Another mutual interest is acting, with Sculfor, who is now living in Los Angeles, hoping to break into the business, an ambition that will likely get a bit of a boost now that his pretty mug is splashed on the front of a national magazine.

Aniston's rep, however, is quick to downplay the seriousness of the romance, telling "Extra," "It's premature to call this a relationship. They've only been on a couple of dates."

A pal also pooh-poohs the hot-and-heavy rumblings to Us Weekly, explaining that Jennifer "is dating a bunch of guys" and isn't looking to go steady.

"She has met a few really great, nice guys," says the insider. "She is just seeing what's out there."

At least Sculfor, who, if you squint really hard, bears a passing resemblance to Aniston's ex-hubby, should stack up well against the competition.

The model, who previously dated British TV host Lisa Snowden, a onetime flame of George Clooney's, is a charmer, according to another ex, London socialite Lady Victoria Hervey.

"He's a lovely guy," she tells People. "A gentleman. Simple things, like opening doors, he does all that. He'll think of the woman before himself."

While holding open a door seems like the least a gentleman can do, we'll take her word that Sculfor is a well-mannered catch, despite declaring to the London Mirror in 1997, "I've never had any problems with girls. I've turned heads."

Aniston, for her part, has been keeping a low dating profile since splitting with Vince Vaughn late last year and has denied rumors linking her to a handful of eligible bachelors, including Orlando Bloom and Keanu Reeves (she's remained mum on recent reports of a "friends with benefits" arrangement with her baggy-eyed, barrel-chested former beau).

Speaking of Vaughn, the New York Daily News says he was a veritable babe magnet while making the scene last week at Los Angeles hot spot Teddy's.

In the wee small hours, after extensively sampling the club's refreshments, Vaughn made a pit stop in the men's room, where, says the paper, he "slapped the back of every guy in the bathroom and said, 'See what happens when you come out alone? You get the ladies!'"

And how. He reportedly left with "a pretty brunette."
